The Born This Way Era: A Retrospective

Today marks the one-year anniversary of Lady Gaga’s multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated, and record-breaking album, “Born This Way”. Let’s take a quick look back on some of Gaga’s most memorable and iconic moments over the past year or so.

January 1st, 2011: Gaga tweets the first promotional photo from the “Born This Way” GagaxNick Knight photoshoot.

January 20th, 2011: Gaga premieres a remixed version of “Scheisse” via Mugler’s “Anatomy of Change” video featuring Rick Genest.

February 10th, 2011: Gaga covers Vogue Magazine.

February 11th, 2011: Gaga premieres “Born This Way” on iTunes worldwide. The song went on to break airplay, iTunes, and chart records, and it debuted at #1 in over a dozen countries.

February 13th, 2011: Gaga’s “60 Minutes” interview with Anderson Cooper airs before the 53rd annual Grammy awards.

February 13th, 2011: Gaga attends and debuts “Born This Way” live for the first time at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards, where she walked away with three trophies for “The Fame Monster” and “Bad Romance”.

February 17th, 2011: Gaga visits Good Morning America to talk about her collaboration with MAC Cosmetics to raise awareness for AIDS prevention.

February 27th, 2011: Gaga premieres the video for “Born This Way”.

March 2nd, 2011: Gaga premieres a remixed version of “Government Hooker” via Nicola Formichetti’s Mugler fashion show during Paris Fashion Week. 

March 12th, 2011: Gaga begins popping up in random night clubs to promote/perform “Born This Way”.

March 14th, 2011: Gaga begins to sell “Prayer Bracelets” to benefit those who were affected by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

March 22nd, 2011: Gaga visited Google headquarters in California for an interview and to promote “Born This Way”.

March 28th, 2011: Gaga celebrates her 25th birthday amidst thousands of fans at The Monster Ball.

April 15th, 2011: Gaga premieres “Judas” on iTunes worldwide. The song went on to be blacklisted by radio and break iTunes records. The song debuted at #10 on Billboard’s “Hot 100” chart and stayed there for one week.

April 28th, 2011: Gaga debuts “Judas” live for the first time on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

May 3rd, 2011: Gaga premieres the video for “Judas”.

May 6th, 2011: The Monster Ball ends its record-breaking, 201-date run in Mexico City in front of over 60,000 people.

May 9th, 2011: Gaga premieres “The Edge of Glory” on iTunes worldwide. The song went on to break iTunes records and become the era’s second most successful single and one of Gaga’s most successful radio hits to date. The song debuted at #3 on Billboard’s “Hot 100” chart and stayed in the top ten for several weeks.

May 11th, 2011: Gaga visits France’s Le Grand Journal for an interview and to perform her current single, “Judas”.

May 13th, 2011: Gaga stops by the UK’s Graham Norton Show for an interview and to perform “Judas” and “Born This Way”.

May 15th, 2011: Gaga headlines Radio One’s “Big Weekend” concert, where she performed “Just Dance”, “Bad Romance”, “Born This Way”, and others.

May 16th, 2011: Lady Gaga guest edits an issue of Metro International, the world’s largest free media publication.

May 16th, 2011: Gaga covers V Magazine.

May 16th, 2011: Gaga releases “Hair” as the final promotional single for “Born This Way”. The song topped several iTunes music charts worldwide and debuted at #13 on Billboard’s “Hot 100” chart.

May 21st, 2011: Lady Gaga performs and guest stars alongside Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg in a Saturday Night Live skit.

May 23rd, 2011: “Born This Way” is released and tops every iTunes music chart worldwide. The album went on to debut at #1 in over 20 countries. To date, the album has sold over 6,000,000 copies worldwide, won over 30 awards, and broken dozens of records.

May 23rd, 2011: Gaga stops by the Late Show With David Letterman to promote “Born This Way”.

May 23rd, 2011: Gaga visits a Best Buy store in New York to sign copies of “Born This Way” for hundreds of fans.

May 27th, 2011: Gaga kicks off Good Morning America’s Summer Concert Series with a concert-like show in New York City.

June 6th, 2011: Gaga debuts a new blue bob at the 2011 CFDA Fashion Awards, where she was awarded the Fashion Icon award.

June 9th, 2011: Gaga performs parts of “Scheisse”, “Born This Way” and “The Edge of Glory” and is interviewed by Heidi Klum at the finale of Germany’s Next Top Model.

June 11th, 2011: Gaga gives a lengthy speech on equal rights before performing acoustic versions of “Born This Way” and “The Edge of Glory” for a crowd of 30,000 at Euro Pride in Rome.

June 14th, 2011: Gaga performs “The Edge of Glory” and “Judas” on France’s X  Factor.

June 16th, 2011: Gaga premieres the video for “The Edge of Glory”. The reactions were 100% positive.

June 17th, 2011: Gaga visits the UK’s Paul O’Grady Show for an interview and to perform “Born This Way”, “Yoü and I”, “Hair”, “Judas”, and “The Edge of Glory”.

June 19th, 2011: Gaga rehearses for her performance at the 2011 Much Music Video Awards and was later awarded the MMVAs for ”Best International Artist Video” and “People’s Choice: Favourite International Video”.

June 25th, 2011: Gaga performs “The Edge of Glory” and “Born This Way” at MTV Japan’s Video Music AID.

July 1st, 2011: Gaga arrives in Taiwan.

July 3rd, 2011: Gaga is interviewed on Lady Gaga Day in Taiwan before performing for 44,000 people who showed up to a 6,000 person capacity amphitheater.

July 7th, 2011: Gaga holds a press conference before holding a massive showcase performance in Singapore the same night.

July 9th, 2011: Gaga arrives in Sydney, Australia to perform at Sydney Town Hall.

July 13th, 2011: Gaga performs in Australia at Sydney Town Hall. The show was dubbed “Sydney Monster Hall”.

July 18th, 2011: Gaga visits The Howard Stern Show to be interviewed and to perform “Hair” and “The Edge of Glory”.

July 20th, 2011: Gaga releases “Yoü and I” as the fourth single from “Born This Way”. The song was a hit in the US, selling over 2,000,000 copies, and peaked at #6 on Billboard’s “Hot 100” chart.

July 28th, 2011: Gaga performs and guest judges on So You Think You Can Dance.

July 31st, 2011: Gaga finishes up her duet with Tony Bennett and leaves a recording studio in New York City.

August 1st, 2011: Gaga performs “Yoü and I” on ABC’s The View.

August 16th, 2011: Gaga premieres the video for “Yoü and I”.

August 18th, 2011: Gaga takes photos with fans as she makes her way to MTV Studios.

August 28th, 2011: Jo Calderone attends and performs “Yoü and I” at the 2011 MTV VMAs.

September 12th, 2011: Gaga shooting for her Vanity Fair Magazine photoshoot.

September 24th, 2011: Gaga headlines the first ever iHeart Radio Music Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada.

October 1st, 2011: Gaga arrives at the STING: 25th Anniversary Birthday Concert.

October 8th, 2011: Gaga arrives at iTV Studios in the UK for her interview and performance on the Jonathan Ross Show.

October 13th, 2011: Gaga films the video for “Marry The Night”.

October 15th, 2011: Lady Gaga performs for former President Bill Clinton, his family, and a large crowd during the 10th anniversary celebration of the Bill Clinton Foundation. She performed “Born This Way”, “The Edge of Glory”, “Bad Romance”, and “You & I”. She personalized lyrics for the Clinton family throughout, and she even left the stage as “Government Hooker” blared over the speakers. 

October 28th, 2011: Gaga attends a press conference in India.

November 6th, 2011: Gaga attends and performs at the 2011 MTV EMAs, where she took home awards for “Best Female”, “Biggest Fans”, “Best Song”, and “Best Video”.

November 10th, 2011: Gaga attends and performs at Germany’s Bambi Awards.

November 15th, 2011: Gaga releases “Marry The Night” as the fifth and final single from “Born This Way”. It did nothing but flop.

November 17th, 2011: Gaga leaves the Children In Need Concert after performing “Born This Way”, “The Edge of Glory”, and “Marry The Night”.

November 21st, 2011: Gaga officially opens Gaga’s Workshop at Barney’s in New York City.

November 24th, 2011: Gaga’s Thanksgiving special, “A Very Gaga Thanksgiving” airs on ABC in the US.

November 30th, 2011: Gaga attends and performs at the 54th annual Grammy Awards Nominations concert and receives three Grammy nominations for “Album of The Year”, “Best Pop Vocal Album”, and “Best Pop Vocal Performance” for “Yoü and I”.

December 2nd, 2011: Gaga premieres the video for “Marry The Night”.

December 9th, 2011: Gaga performs at Z100’s Jingle Ball.

December 31st, 2011: Gaga performs at Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve.

February 6th, 2012: Gaga tweets the first preview of The Born This Way Ball Tour’s stage.

February 7th, 2012: Gaga tweets the official promotional poster for The Born This Way Ball Tour

February 12th, 2012: Gaga attends the 54th annual Grammy Awards.

February 29th, 2012: Gaga attends the official launch of The Born This Way Foundation.

March 18th, 2012: Gaga’s interview for Oprah’s Next Chapter airs on Oprah’s OWN Network.

March 28th, 2012: Gaga begrudgingly celebrates her 26th birthday.

April 20th, 2012: Gaga arrives in Seoul, South Korea.

April 21st, 2012: Gaga tweets first picture of Born This Way Ball Tour merchandise.

April 27th, 2012: The Born This Way Ball Tour kicks off in Seoul, South Korea to a sold-out crowd of over 50,000 people.

April 27th, 2012: The first HQ pictures of The Born This Way Ball Tour stage emerge.

April 28th, 2012: Gaga arrives in Hong Kong.

May 8th, 2012: Gaga arrives in Tokyo, Japan.

May 19th, 2012: Muslim and Christian groups in the Philippines and Indonesia begin to protest The Born This Way Ball Tour. Gaga went ahead and performed in the Philippines and is expected to do the same in Indonesia.
